(Washington, DC)-- Mayor Anthony A. Williams today swore in the inaugural board of the District's Serious Incident and Fatality Review Committee. In an effort to reduce the number of preventable deaths of District wards and/or residents with mental retardation, the committee will examine serious incidents and deaths of those eighteen years and over with developmental disabilities. According to Mayor Williams, "Making our system work will take a long-term investment - and a commitment from our entire community."
Modeled after the Child Fatality Review Committee, this committee will also assist the Williams Administration in identifying the causes and circumstances contributing to serious incidents or deaths of individuals living in group homes, foster homes, nursing homes or any other health care entities licensed and located in thc District.
Established by a Mayoral order, this committee will:
1) Develop and monitor plans for the implementation of and recommendations for systematic changes within various governmental and private agencies.
2) Develop and monitor plans for the implementation of recommendations to improve and maximize systemic responses to incidents of abuse, neglect and maltreatment.
This Committee, which is primarily charged with intervention and prevention, is part of the Mayor's commitment to protecting the life and safety of MRDD residents and bringing accountability to the system.
