FENTY CALLS FOR MAYOR WILLIAMS TO DECIDE WHO WILL RUN THE DISTRICT'S FIRE DEPARTMENT
Today, Councilmember Adrian Fenty (D-Ward 4) asked Mayor Anthony Williams (D) to make a decision concerning who will head
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services (DCFEMS). Due to discrepancies about professional and educational
accomplishments on his resume, Ronnie Few, present D.C. Fire Chief, is expected to resign as early as this week. Assistant
Chiefs Gary Garland and Marcus Anderson and Deputy Chief Bruce Cowan allegedly had similar blemishes on their resumes,
and Chief Garland has been given thirty (30) days to either resign or face termination. Mayor Williams has not appointed anyone
in Chief Few's place, although Assistant Chief Adrian Thompson was in charge since Few's absence from work. As a result,
Councilmember Fenty was not only concerned for the 74,000 residents in his ward, but also for the general population of the
District. "The present disorder and lack of clear leadership in the city's Fire Department would be disastrous should there be any
public calamity for which the Fire Department would be called upon," said Fenty. "The public
confidence in the Fire Department and its leadership must be restored." |
