MAYOR PROMISES A FAMILY-FRIENDLY, HEALTHY CITY
New Short-Term Action Goals Released
Washington, D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams today reinforced his commitment to
District children and families with the unveiling of new short-term action items intended
to make Washington, D.C. a "Family-Friendly, Healthy City". The newest group of
initiatives in the Mayor's ongoing series of short-term action goals focuses on
improvements in the operations of the Departments of Health and Parks and Recreation.
Mayor Williams, who spoke from the playground of Parkview Recreation Center, emphasized
the need to rebuild District neighborhoods by strengthening families. "Strong
families are at the core of every successful community. These initiatives are designed to
keep families healthy and support them as they raise our future schoolteachers, doctors
and leaders in government and business."
The "'Family-Friendly, Healthy City" Goals are:
Goal. All City Pools Opened On-Time According to Published Schedule
Deadline: June 21
Goal. Food Safety Inspections Increased and Compliance rate for Food Safety
Inspections Increased by 40%
Deadline: June 30
Goal: All District Playgrounds Brought Up to National Safety standards
Deadline: December 31
Goal. Over 1 000 residents Placed in Addiction I Treatment Programs
Deadline: December 31
Goal: Thousands of District Families Newly Enrolled in Medicaid and Private Health
Insurance Programs Under the "D. C. Healthy Families " Program Deadline.

Director of the Department of Health Dr. Marlene Kelly and Dr. Betty Jo Gaines,
Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, who both expressed their support,
joined Mayor Williams. "Embodied in the Goal of a Family-Friendly, Healthy City is
the Department of Health's commitment to assuring the health and safety of residents and
visitors to the District of Columbia," said Dr. Kelly.
Dr. Gaines emphasized the importance of Mayor Williams' commitment: "Playgrounds
are a fundamental part of the childhood experience and integral to Mayor Williams vision
for strengthening our city. We are committed to making sure that they are safe and
attractive places for our children." |
