WHO IS REALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONTINUED FAILURE OF OUR SCHOOLS?

Since 1996, our schools have been. run by the Control Board, which has presided over the continued failure of our schools. This is the same Control Board that gave us the "General", who couldn't open schools on time for three years, who eliminated public participation in the decision making process, and forced DCPS to adopt a financial management system which. has failed to pay hundreds of school personnel accurately.

The Control Board has been responsible for the entire school governance flap. When Kevin Chavous began his politically motivated attack on the current school board about the lack of clearly delineated roles and responsibilities between the Board and the Superintendent, the school board had already submitted a board and superintendent roles and responsibilities plan, and a revised code of ethics, to the Control Board, pursuant to a transition plan imposed by the control board.

Why didn't Alice Rivlin and Constance Newman include the Council and the Mayor in the transition process, and obtain their input in the creation of the Transition Plan developed by school board members, parents and community representatives? Alice Rivlin and Constance Newman could have nipped this entire public fiasco in the bud, but they didn't. Because the Control Board wants the elected school board to fail! The Control Board (Congress) wants an appointed school board!

Alice Rivlin undercut the authority of the Superintendent, the recommendations of its' appointed Board of Trustees, and the desires of the community over the Paul Jr, High Charter School conversion. The Board of Trustees quit in protest and Superintendent Ackerman resigned. Don't let the Control Board, the Mayor or anyone else rob you of your right to have continued community input in the management of our public schools! The Mayor and the Council have failed us by not supporting the rights of our citizens to have continued input into public education. Instead they are fighting among themselves for sole control over the school systems budget and real estate inventory. Don't believe the hype!

ON JUNE 27th, VOTE NO ON THE SCHOOL GOVERNANCE REFERENDUM QUESTION.
