March 5, 2001 A Moral and Timely Request to Anthony Williams, Mayor of Washington, D.C.Dear Honorable Anthony Williams, Mayor, Washington, D.C.: During the Town Hall meeting at Union Temple Baptist Church on February 28, 2001 you had ample opportunity to address the community and to enlighten the public in regards to proposals concerning D.C. General Hospital. You were given a forum to win the people over to your position, and yet you failed to do so. Many Clergy organizations and individuals have raised serious concerns in reference to the proposal being argued. Great numbers in the religious community, and many in the medical community believe that the questions which should have been answered have not been answered, and therefore request of you that all movement cease in concluding contractual arrangements that will affect D C General Hospital. We request that you, the Control Board, and all entities concerned with this matter step back so that a rational and cohesive plan can he developed that will deliver effective, efficient, and well integrated health services for all residents who need access to such services. We further request that you sit down with the Clergy within 48 to 72 hours so that a framework can be developed that will truly address the citizen's concerns, and move toward manifesting a quality and effective healthcare system. One problem to date is that you have not worked cooperatively with the residents or the City Council when it has come to envisioning a healthcare system. It is time for that process to begin. This process should be guided by Clergy because we have the moral imperative to see that not only the soul is ministered to, hut the body as well. Also, within our communities of faith are people who are dearly dependent upon delivery of healthcare in efficient and comprehensive ways. It is of the utmost importance that you bring the process of dismantling D.C. General Hospital to a grinding halt, and with Clergy develop where we need to go and how to get there. Unless this is done, the soul of the city is lost, and the body is sickened to the point of death. Rev. Willie Wilson, Union Temple Baptist Church |
