Mayor Endorses Kathy’s Re-election:
"Now is the time to keep experienced leadership"

Washington D.C. – September 6, 2002 – In a show of unity among Democratic elected officials, Mayor Anthony Williams, Council Chairman Linda Cropp, Ward 3 Councilmember Kathy Patterson and other Councilmembers urged voters Tuesday to re-elect incumbents who have moved the District forward over the last four years.

Mayor Williams, in announcing support for Patterson’s re-election, praised her independence and Council oversight as chair of the Committee on the Judiciary. "Now is the time to keep experienced leadership," Williams said.

Patterson noted her support for the mayor four years ago, and underscored the difficult financial times ahead as the District responds to the national economic downturn and resulting loss of revenue.

At a press conference on Freedom Plaza, with the renovated John Wilson Building as the backdrop, Chairman Cropp introduced nine Democratic Councilmembers who each voiced support for Mayor Williams, including Ward 7 Councilmember Kevin Chavous who introduced Mayor Williams. Absent were the Council’s two Republicans, David Catania and Carol Schwartz, and Ward 8 Councilmember Sandy Allen, who has endorsed Williams’ opponent.
