Dear Neighbor:

I seek reelection as Ward 3’s representative to the Council of the District of Columbia. I ask for your support in the September 10th Democratic primary to continue the progress the District has made.

When I first asked for your support in 1994, the picture was bleak: the District had a shrinking tax base, a $722 million deficit, and leadership unable to address the crisis. I offered "a new voice and common sense on fiscal reforms." I started my first term by proposing a five-year plan of sharp budget cuts to start us on the road to recovery, and I’ve made the difficult calls every year since.

Eight years later the city is back in the bond markets with five consecutive balanced budgets. To continue this progress means ongoing, tough-minded oversight. It means a Council that works with the Mayor on spending and on services. I will continue to be an independent voice for disciplined, fair and efficient city government.

I have kept my promise to bring budget discipline and effective legislative oversight to the District, and I ask for your support to continue this important work together.

Sincerely,

Kathy Patterson
