TEACHERS, FIREFIGHTERS and COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS ENDORSE MENDELSON for RE-ELECTION TO CITY COUNCIL

(Washington, DC) - The campaign to reelect At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson announces the endorsements of three organizations:

Washington Teachers' Union, AFT/AFL-CIO, Local 6;
DC Firefighters' Association, Local 36; and
A.C.O.R.N (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now political action committee).

"I am honored to have the endorsements of our teachers, firefighters and the community of organizations who fight for our neighborhoods and quality of life issues," said At-Large Councilmember Mendelson. "I believe these endorsements, and others I've received, speak to the work I've done and my hands-on involvement in a wide range of communities. I am the only At-Large Council candidate with endorsements from Democratic organizations in Ward 2, Ward 3, Ward 7 and Ward 8, the only candidate to be endorsed by organized labor and the only candidate with support from the environmental community."

Speaking on his union's endorsement of Councilmember Mendelson, Ray Sneed, president of the DC Firefighters' Association, Local 36 had this to say, "Firefighters are supportive of elected officials who champion their cause, and Phil Mendelson has a 100% voting record on Labor and Firefighter issues. We're proud to support Phil."

Barbara A. Bullock, Washington Teachers' Union, Local 6 president, said, "We endorse Councilmember Mendelson because he is supportive of Labor. Phil's been a leader in the effort to improve our schools and the education system in DC."

And, in announcing her organizations support of Mendelson, DC A.C.O.R.N. president Katie Fitzgerald said, "The A.C.O.R.N. political action committee endorsed Phil Mendelson because of the courage he has demonstrated speaking out on a variety of issues. Phil is a leader in the effort to crack down on predatory lending schemes and he stood with us on lead poisoning prevention and numerous other issues of importance. This was an easy endorsement for A.C.O.R.N., no other candidate came close."

The Teachers' Union, Firefighters' Association and A.C.O.R.N. endorsements are the latest additions to a citywide list of organizations backing At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson's bid for reelection.

Mendelson is the only At-Large Council candidate to receive the support of organized labor. Of the four Democratic Ward organizations to have made endorsements, Mendelson has captured all four (Wards 2, 3, 7 and 8). Also, on Earth Day 2002 the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Mendelson. In May 2002, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club endorsed Mendelson. DOCPAC, on behalf of doctor members of the D.C. Medical Society, voted to endorse Mendelson, as have the Trial Lawyers Association of DC and the Washington Board of Realtors.
