A PROPOSED RESOLUTION IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Chairman Linda W. Cropp, at the request of the Mayor, introduced the following resolution, which was referred to the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Latino Affairs, and Property Management.

To confirm the mayoral appointment of Mr. Kenneth L. Saunders as the Director of the Office of Human Rights.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this resolution may be cited as the "Director of the Office of Human Rights Kenneth L. Saunders Confirmation Approval Resolution of 2003".

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia confirms the appointment of:

as Director of the Office of Human Rights, in accordance with section 2 of the Confirmation Act of 1978, effective March 3, 1979 (D.C. Law 2-142; D.C. Official Code section 1-523.01) (2001), to serve at the pleasure of the Mayor.

Sec. 3. Fiscal impact statement.

The Council adopts the fiscal impact statement in the committee report as the fiscal impact statement required by section 602 (c)(3) of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, approved December 24, 1973 (87 Stat. 813; D.C. Official Code section 1-206.02 (c)(3)) (2001).

Sec. 4. The Secretary of the Council of the District of Columbia shall transmit a copy of this resolution, upon its adoption, each to the nominee and to the Mayor.

Sec. 5. This resolution shall take effect immediately.

Duties include, but are not limited to, conducting diversity training for the City of Shreveport, planning, carrying out and assisting in programs of neighborhood organizations. In addition, as Director I am also charged with providing neutral public forums to bring diverse groups together during times of crisis or conflict, working with local business regarding issues of economic development and community involvement. Responsible for budget, fund raising, grant writing and securing revenues sources (primarily diversity training) for the Commission.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION, Columbus, OH, 1998-2001.

Charged with enforcing City Code 2331 (Civil Rights Code). Duties include, but not limited to, advising the Director on all policy, administrative and legal matters pertaining to City Code 2331. Handled day to day operations of the Commission in the absence of the Director. Implemented Hate Crimes Task Force, Religious Accommodations in the Workplace Guidelines for Columbus Chamber of Commerce. At request of City Council, devised and put in place Columbus City Procedures for investigating citizen complaints against city police and firefighters. Instrumental in partnering with new immigrant populations. Established meditation program for small and medium sized business
