Announcement of appointments

Dan Tangherlini
City Administrator/Deputy Mayor

Dan Tangherlini, 39, will serve as city administrator/deputy mayor for the incoming administration of Mayor-elect Adrian Fenty, with responsibility for managing the day-today operations of the District. His appointment will be a return to the District, where he served as the Director of the District of Columbia Department of Transportation from June 2000 to February 2006.

Tangherlini not only brings impressive credentials and management knowledge to his new position, he is noted for his attention to detail and customer satisfaction-a trait the Fenty Administration plans to make a priority during his administration.

Tangherlini is most recently known for his work as the interim general manager of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), which he led from February 2006. During his tenure, he worked to make the agency more responsive to its riders and workers and more willing to consider new ideas, such as music in the subway and rail cars without carpet.

Prior to serving as the transportation director, he was chief financial officer of the Metropolitan Police Department from November 1998 to May 2000. In the executive office of the mayor, Mr. Tangherlini was the leader of the short-term action team from January to April 1999 that developed high-visibility, short-term initiatives for District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams. Before joining the District Government, Tangherlini was a senior program analyst in the Policy Office of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and a program examiner with the Office of Management and Budget in the Executive Office of the President.

Tangherlini received his bachelor's and master's degrees in public administration from the University of Chicago, as well as a master's in business administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Tangherlini lives on Capitol Hill with his wife and two children. He is an active member of his community, participating in the Capitol Hill Restoration Society, the Stanton Park Neighborhood Association, St. Peter's of Capitol Hill and other community-based groups.
