CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 1213 K Street, NW Washington, DC 20005 202-347-7201 Fax: 202-638-6764 www.dcchamber.org April 5, 2002 The Honorable Vincent Orange, Sr. Dear Mr. Chairman: We appreciate the thoroughness of your oversight on matters before the Committee on Government Operations. There are many challenging issues that you are tackling, including the Inspector General's (I0) report on fundraising activities within the Executive Branch of our government. We know that your committee will be able to make balanced recommendations to the Council and Mayor as a result of this report. Those recommendations of your Committee would guide not only elected officials and appointed staff, but also businesses which are willing and enthusiastic contributors to elected officials, as they try to balance their day to day work with political or election activity in the most ethical manner, consistent with clearly articulated legislative and regulatory standards. The Chamber understands that the Mayor may be invited to appear before your committee to respond to the IG's Report. With great respect, the District of Columbia Chamber of Commerce recommends that the Mayor be allowed to respond instead to the recommendations of your committee, rather than to the IG's report itself, since there have been referrals of portions of the report to other governing entities. The Chamber stands ready to assist you in any way that we can, since our member businesses are vitally interested in continuing our strong support for elected officials in the District of Columbia. Thank you for your consideration, Sincerely, Cc: The Honorable Anthony A. Williams Bcc: Barbara Lang, President and CEO, DC Chamber of Commerce |
