DPW Director Leslie Hotaling to Leave Post
Career DC Employee Retires After 25 Years on the Job

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams issued the following statement upon learning that Leslie Hotaling, the Director of the District’s Department of Public Works, has announced her decision to leave her position on April 17th, 2004.

S T A T E M E N T

The departure of Leslie Hotaling will represent a huge loss to the District of Columbia. Her enthusiasm, competence, energy and sense of humor will be missed by all. She has led the department to a new level of professionalism and performance. She is, without a doubt, one of the finest public works administrators in the nation. Although small in stature, she has proven herself to be a heavyweight in a world dominated by heavy equipment and heavy set males.

DPW is now able to deliver the kind of reliable, basic services that residents expect from their local government. Trash is picked up on time and streets are regularly swept. From snow removal to new improvements in abandoned car towing, DPW has made a "visible difference" in the streetscape of the District of Columbia. There is no doubt that the Department of Public Works, under the leadership of Leslie Hotaling, has helped to bring about the renewed vitality in the District’s economy and the robust real estate market we now enjoy.

Leslie has brought compassion and vitality to an agency that had been long neglected. The employees know it, her colleagues in the government know it, and the citizens of the District know it. We will all miss her drive, her motivation and her skills. I wish her well in whatever she does in the future.
