District Negotiates Interim Site for Vehicle
Impoundment Lot:
Addison Road Location Is Bigger, More Accessible
(Washington, DC) The District Department of Public Works (DPW) today
announced that a location has been chosen to serve as the city’s
short-term impoundment lot for towed vehicles. The property, at 4800
Addison Road in Prince George’s County, Maryland, is readily available
and meets the necessary criteria for size, zoning and access to public
transportation. The District will be leasing the lot at $2.75 per square
foot, or approximately $1 million per year, until a permanent impoundment
lot is developed.
Part of a larger industrial tract, the Addison Road property is paved
and offers roughly twice the capacity of the former Brentwood Road lot.
The facility is also more accessible than the previous lot. Approximately
400 yards from the District border, the future impoundment lot is only ½
mile from the Deanwood Metrorail Station on the Orange line. There is also
a Metrobus stop in front of the facility. Other significant on-site
features include existing security fencing and a multi-use building.
Formerly a truck repair shop, the brick building in the center of the
property provides a new maintenance and cost-saving benefit to the DPW
towing fleet - indoor storage for approximately 12 tow cranes. Additional
space, after basic renovation, will house offices, showers and lockers for
DPW staff.
"Most of these folks have been working out of a drafty trailer at
Brentwood for years, said DPW Director Leslie Hotaling. "We are very
pleased to be able to give our employees a better work environment."
The Department plans to begin accepting towed vehicles at the new
impoundment lot within 30 days.
Under a flexible leasing agreement, DPW will be able to use the
property until a permanent site is developed – a project anticipated to
take a minimum of two years. |
