Destruction and Creation
Dear Capitalists:
Melody Record Store, Penn Cameras, Bloomingdales in White Flint,
Borders Books, Barnes and Noble in Georgetown, Loehmann’s, Filenes
Basement. Capitalism mandates creative destruction, the closing of
stores and companies, sometimes the disappearance of entire economic
sectors, so that other economic actives can take their place. But
sometimes the destruction seems to come at a faster pace, and the stores
and companies that are lost are those to which we have a greater
sentimental attachment, than usual.

How I’m Celebrating the Cold Snap
Bryce Suderow, streetstories@juno.com
I’ve decided to celebrate the drop in temperature by watching
movies about people in cold climates. For instance, I’ve watched John
Carpenter’s movie The Thing three times. It’s set in Antarctica. Now
I’m watching Whiteout, which also takes place in that setting. I may
follow up with Death Hunt, which takes place in Canada. I need more
movies. Can anyone suggest some titles for me?
What’s everyone else doing?

Audiobooks Make Me Homesick for DC
Star Lawrence, jkellaw@aol.com
I must listen to my fiction now, due to failed eye surgeries, and
enjoyed George Pelecanos’ The Cut, with a new character, Spero
Lucas, Iraq vet and investigator for a defense lawyer downtown.
Pelecanos describes every block, every street, every landmark of the
city— and mentioned The Crossroads music venue twice. I saw Roy
Buchanan there several times. In another audio, I forget which, someone
casually threw out Chief Ike’s Mambo Room and I almost jumped off the
bed!

euthanasia is for. A government that is so hazardous to your health
needs to be exterminated before it kills us!
