The classified supplement to themail

The classified supplement to themail, August 24, 1998

Dear subscribers:

You may have noticed that yesterday’s issue of themail was commercial free. In fact, I’m not going to be selling ads. However, several people have submitted unpaid classified ads that may interest you. Some of these "ads," like the notices of the Bender Prize and the mayoral forum, obviously belong with the other messages in the list. Other ads, like the one asking for used computer donations, are obviously non-commercial. And yet others are selling classes or services, etc. Let me know what kinds of unpaid classifieds you want to see in themail in the future. What kinds of ads are useful to you? Which interest you? Which kinds should I send to your mailboxes, and which should I reject? I won’t publish your answers, but I welcome your guidance.

Bender Prize for Community Service Announced
Phil Shapiro, pshapiro@his.com

The Bender Foundation, associated with George Washington University, has announced a new prize for community service. This prize will be recognizing a DC resident who has made substantial volunteer contributions to the lives of people in the District of Columbia. The chosen honoree will receive $25,000 in cash, along with a sculpture, "Hope," by John Safer, at an award ceremony taking place on January 26, 1999. There's an October 16 deadline for nominations. I've placed further info about the nomination process for this award on the web at: http://www.his.com/~pshapiro/benderprize.html (I'm not associated with the Bender Foundation, but wanted to make sure this info got out to as many people as possible.)

There are many people I can think of who would be deserving of this award. If you know someone who has distinguished themselves in service to others, please do consider nominating them. Being nominated is itself an honor.
