Francis J. Buckley, Jr.

Francis Buckley was appointed Interim Library Director of the District of Columbia Public Library April 4, 2005.

Previously he was the Superintendent of Documents at the US Government Printing Office. For five years at GPO he was responsible for national programs for the distribution of government information to depository libraries, the sales of government publications, cataloging of government information products, and electronic dissemination of government information via GPO Access.

Prior to coming to Washington, for three years he was the Director of the Shaker Heights Public Library, adjacent to Cleveland, OH. Preceding that he worked and lived in Detroit, MI for nearly 30 years. In his career at the Detroit Public Library he was a reference librarian, government documents specialist, collection development coordinator, assistant director for technical services, and associate director for public services. He also served as a librarian while in the US Army in Vietnam.

Mr. Buckley has been active in many professional organizations. He is currently on the Council of the American Library Association, the Board of Trustees of the Freedom to Read Foundation, and the Board of Directors of the District of Columbia Library Association. He has been elected to serve on the Executive Board of the American Library Association starting in June 2005. Among his other activities he has been on the Board of Trustees of OCLC, the Board of Directors of the Detroit Literacy Coalition, and President of the Michigan Library Association.

Mr. Buckley attended NC State College for two years, and went on to obtain his BA and MLS at the University of Michigan. He has received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Michigan School of Library Science.

In recognition of his community involvement, Mr. Buckley has received a Distinguished Service Award from the Detroit- Literacy Coalition a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Literacy Volunteers of America-Detroit, a Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council, and a Bicentennial Good Neighbor Award from the Mayor's Committee, Keep Detroit Beautiful.
