STAND UP! FOR DEMOCRACY IN DC COALITION BLASTS SUPREME COURT DECISION ON DC GUN LAWS

The Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition denounced today’s Supreme Court ruling that overturned the District of Columbia’s gun laws, calling the decision an assault on home rule that will lead to more gun violence in the District.

“With this anti-democratic and ill-conceived decision, the Supreme Court has accomplished in one blow what the District’s adversaries in Congress failed to do – gut the gun-control laws that protect our citizens from violence,” said Stand Up! President Anise Jenkins. “The District already is experiencing a spike in violent crime this summer – how many more of our citizens will be the victims of guns because of what the Court has done?”

“Our elected leaders are better judges of how to address crime in the District than the Supreme Court – whose members were confirmed by a U.S. Senate in which the District has no vote,” said Stand Up! member Bill Mosley.

The Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition was founded in 1997 to demand full democratic rights for the District of Columbia – including full voting representation in Congress; local control over the District’s budgets, laws and criminal justice system; and action by Congress on the District’s long-standing petition for statehood.
