This letter replies to an item by Dorothy
Brizill in the April 17, 2002, issue of themail. GOVERNMENT OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Inspector General April 18, 2002 The Honorable Vincent B Orange, Sr. Chairman Committee on Government Operations Council of the District of Columbia 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Suite 108 Washington, D.C, 20004 Via facsimile and first class mail Dear Chairman Orange: I am writing to respond to an article published today by Dorothy Brizill on the DC Watch website. In the article, she notes that I sent the City Council a copy of a delivery receipt that was signed by Colbert King, of The Washington Post, when our Office delivered to him the "Report of Investigation of Fundraising Activities of the Executive Office of the Mayor" (Report). She states that sending the Council this receipt was evidence that I was "giving the newspaper special favors and access" and that exposure of this receipt was "inadvertent." I would like to respond for the record. First, we sent Mr. King the same redacted version that was placed on our website and given to all interested reporters on that same day. At no time have we provided the full copy of the Report to The Washington Post or to any other news outlet. Second, it was my intention to include the receipt regarding Mr. King. The Council requested information about our delivery process for the Report. Therefore, we provided copies of receipts for every report delivered, irrespective of whether the Report was in the fu11 or redacted version. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at (202) 727-2540. Sincerely, cc: The Honorable Anthony A. Williams, Mayor, District of Columbia |
