Subject: The Future

Dear DDOT Team:

As of the end of this year, I will be leaving DDOT as Director.

I took this post 22 months ago . . . not even 2 full years and am extremely proud of what the District Department of Transportation accomplished during that time.  When we looked back on everything this last few weeks, we were truly amazed at the amount of work and the successes we have celebrated.  From the completion and start of multiple streetscape projects to the launch of the first regional bike sharing system and, of course, getting the streetcar program up and running.

We initiated a two-year Action Agenda that focused on five core principles and executed many of our key performance measures within the first year.

We now have an on-line permitting system, an on-line transportation portal that provides real insight into projects, budgets and timelines, a sustainability plan that brings us in line with environmental practices and we boast one of the best DOT communication and social media programs in the country with over 5,000 twitter followers and nearly 1,000 fans on Facebook.

We came together and survived and performed above and beyond during last year’s Snowmaggedon.

I am extremely proud of all the men and women here at DDOT and humbled to have served as your Director.

I want to thank Mayor Adrian Fenty for the opportunity to work with you as well as U.S. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood for the Obama administrations full support during my time here as well as his staff at Federal Highways (FHWA).

As a resident I look forward to continued good work by Mayor-elect Gray and his team and will support them as they continue to grow the District.

I am not sure what I am doing in the immediate future but I have a number of options available to me and will be taking the next month or so to mull things over and decide what to do . . . and take a vacation/honeymoon(!)

I want to thank you all for your support and encourage you to always follow your passions.

Thx,
 -gabe
