Anthony Williams, Democratic Candidate for Mayor of the District of
Columbia, challenges the Washington Bar Association and area law firms to begin a formal,
city-wide, mentoring program in partnership with the DC Public Schools and the private
sector called Mentoring 2000.
Mentoring 2000 would:
- Pair successful, young African-American professionals with young African-American
students;
- Adopt a group of 7th graders from throughout the City and follow them through graduation
providing tutoring and counseling to the students and establishing a scholarship fund for
the students;
- Young Lawyers Division members commit to spending 8 hours a month tutoring these
7th graders, on an ongoing basis, and to securing $1000.00 per student that will be
deposited in the Scholarship Fund and invested for the students that will be used for
college;
- Provide young high school students additional support, especially help with college
admittance processes, prep tests, and financial aid forms;
- Secure matching funds from non-profits and the private sector as capital for the
Scholarship Fund;
- Provide 7th graders with an ongoing support structure and incentives they need to
succeed;
- Illustrate that hard work and studying will pay-off; and
- Demonstrate that role models exist and care about young adults.
The Washington Bar Association, Young Lawyers Division (YLD) can take a leadership role
in setting up the infrastructure and getting members to contribute by adopting schools and
identifying young adults who want to participate in the Mentoring 2000 Program.
