David Schwartzman
Letter to Statehood Party members
September 1, 1998

Dear Statehood Party members,

We the undersigned are urging you to vote for David Schwartzman in the only contested primary of our Party, for Delegate to the House of Representatives. Please remember to vote on September 15.  Why David? Because he is projecting a vision of the District as a living city, with improved quality of life for all, by using present and projected multimillion dollar budget surpluses and making the wealthy pay their fair share of DC taxes. He advocates sharing the more than adequate wealth of our community for meeting human needs, that is, “tough love for the rich”.

He is committed to a program that will:

  • Decrease income inequality in the District, instead of standing by and watching the rich getting richer, and low and middle income people getting the shaft. Restore the safety net to our children, poor, elderly and disabled, reversing the ferocious budget cuts of the last two years forced by the Control Board, cuts made with the general compliance instead of resistance on the part of our elected officials.
  • Restore full funding to UDC and expand its role as a partner in improving public education in the District.
  • Make the District's tax structure progressive instead of favoring the wealthy as we do now. This includes tax relief for small business, low and middle income brackets.
  • Promote sustainable economic growth with long-term employment at living wages to build financial security of District families and individuals.
  • Use community banking and land trusts.
  • Reverse the continued erosion of our human rights by electing people who will provide real political and moral leadership, using the resources of their office to educate and organize our residents into militant action.
  • Reenergize the movement for DC Statehood, and fight for a fair federal payment and a progressive reciprocal commuter tax, measures now possible only by Acts of Congress.
  • Strengthen, not phase out Rent Control, and oppose the Convention Center at Mt. Vernon Square.

David Schwartzman has been a Statehood Party member since moving to the District in 1976. He is the Statehood Deputy on Taxation and the Budget and is on the Central Committee. David has been on the science faculty of Howard University since 1973. His 15 year-old son is presently attending Wilson High School. You can find out more information about his qualifications and program on the dcwatch.com web page (see Elections). Please call him and find out how you can help his campaign (829-9063) or send a message to dwslichen@hotmail.com

Vote for Schwartzman in the Statehood Primary September 15 and make possible a real challenge to Eleanor on the issues!
