THE SCHWARTZ MISSION

My mission as Mayor will be to deliver the quality services people deserve — better schools, safer and cleaner streets, an accessible and responsive government. I want to lower taxes, eliminate costly and cumbersome business regulations, and assure that we have the technological capability to compete in the regional marketplace. I want to bring economic development to our business districts and neighborhoods. I want to revitalize our neighborhoods and create employment opportunities for all our citizens. I want to see our city made clean again. I want to re-plant trees, fix our potholes and pick up the litter. I want to improve the quality of life and bring real democracy to the Nation's Capital.

I want to see a healthy city. We are number one in too many miserable categories — highest infant mortality rate, highest AIDS rate, and highest rate of prostate cancer. I want to turn that around by strengthening our healthcare infrastructure and educating our populace on health issues. I want to provide more educational, recreational and job opportunities for our young people and stop the destructive cycles of drug use, teen pregnancy and violence that rob too many of their futures.

My mission is to bring people together. I have seen firsthand that familiarity breeds tolerance and even warmth. I want to see a city that works and I will give more than full time to see that it happens. And with that will come the return of the over 200,000 residents that we have lost and the return of pride — pride that we are fortunate to be in the greatest and most beautiful city in the world.

I know that I can accomplish my mission because I have the experience and the leadership skills necessary to guide this city. I have remained responsive through all of my elected years. I can attract good people to government. I bring a history of being straightforward on the issues, strong ethical principles, a proven record of hard work, and a long-term commitment to our city.
