Why We Should Vote for Carol Schwartz

Why We Should Not Vote for Anthony Williams

Has consistently worked at restoring Home Rule and gaining full voting representation in Congress. Says he’ll stand eye to eye with Congress to restore self-determination, yet he went behind the backs of the Mayor and the Council to Congress to usurp what remaining power they had to give it to himself as CFO.
Has lived in this city for 33 years and raised a family. All three of her children went through the DC Public School system. Has lived in our city for 2 years and 5 months, and only after he was forced to move here from Arlington as part of his job as CFO.
Is a citywide elected official with experience having served as Vice President of the School Board and two stints as Councilmember At-Large. (1985-89 & 1997-Present) Has not been accountable to any voter since college when he was on the Board of Aldermen in New Haven, CT — not one voter — not in Missouri, Massachusetts, in Arlington, VA, or here.
Has voted in every election since DC began voting rights in Presidential elections in 1968. Prior to September 15th, has voted in ONLY 1 out of 5 elections he was eligible to vote in since moving to DC.
Carol is committed to an efficient UDC so that all citizens have access to a higher education. Proposed turning UDC into a two-year vocational school.
Carol supports rent control. Tony Williams questioned rent control in the past and now in the midst of the campaign says he will look at again in the future.
Carol has always supported the Office on Aging and our seniors as well as programs for our youth. Tony Williams tried to abolish the Office of Aging and devastate the Summer Jobs Program for youths.
Carol wants to make every dollar, District and Federal, work for our city. Tony Williams as CFO, lost the opportunity to use $141 million in Federal grants during FY97.
Has always been a firm supporter of providing affordable low income housing to the citizens of the District of Columbia. Wants to make it easier to transition residents from low income housing to home ownership. Got rid of 1100 low-income apartments in St. Louis while director of the Community Development Agency.
Opposes a gross receipts tax or any increase in taxes. Rather, Carol wants to cut taxes dramatically to encourage families and businesses to come back to the District and prevent father mass exodus of both to the suburbs. Proposes a gross receipts tax, which is a levy on all money taken in by a business each year which would lead to more exodus.
As a Councilmember in her current term of office, Carol has worked with the Council to restore fiscal responsibility which resulted in two balanced budgets. In the 1980s hers was the lone voice against the budgets which led to insolvency. Claims he restored fiscal responsibility and balanced the budget, while Carol, the Council, and the Control Board (with him as an advisor) did the work which was helped by an improved national and local economy.
Carol is the “genuine article,” to quote Colbert I. King, in the Washington Post on September 26, 1998. A vote for Tony Williams would only validate the federal occupation that began with the appointment of the Control Board.
