RHETT

DEMOCRAT
D.C. CITY COUNCIL AT-LARGE

A Fresh Start for the 21st Century

Greg Rhett — Biography

Greg Rhett was born on July 19, 1958, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He graduated from Charlotte’s Olympic High School in 1976 and received a full scholarship to play football (halfback) at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History.

After Duke, Greg volunteered from the United States Air Force and received a Special Duty Assignment to the Pentagon in 1982. After completing his tour of duty, Greg was Honorably Discharged in 1984, and established roots in the D.C. area.

In 1985, Greg began serving his community as a volunteer mentor with troubled youth in Alexandria, Virginia, and as a volunteer coach with the D.C. Special Olympics. At Edison High in Fairfax County, he was a reading teacher, and coach. Greg organized the minority students labeled as “trouble makers” and turned them into the Edison Gospel Choir. Due to his intervention and counseling efforts, suspensions among participants were lowered, and their grades and attitudes were ultimately improved. He also served as the school’s liaison with Minority Parents and increased their PTA participation by creating “Pot-Luck Dinner Nights,” having their children perform before each meeting, and mediating Parent-Teacher conferences.

A D.C. resident since 1990, he is married to a native Washingtonian, Candace Clemons Rhett. He has two daughters, Britni, age 11, and Alexis, age 7. Greg and his family are members of the First Baptist Church of Minnesota Ave.

Greg has been heavily involved in the D.C. community. He has worked as a consultant to the D.C. Superior Court, the D.C. Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Agency, the D.C. Department of Recreation, the D.C. Community Prevention Partnership, and with the U.S. Department of Justice, as a workshop facilitator in “Weed and Seed” Communities.

As the Director of the Montgomery County Summer Jobs Program, in 1993, Greg received written letters of commendation from Congressman Albert Wynn and Congresswoman Connie Morella for his performance.

I have made the tough decisions that are in the best interest of our city by publicly working with our Police to identify illegal liquor and tobacco sales, and by identifying open air drug markets. I have publicly testified for immediate management changes within our Police Department to reform the organization and stop corruption.
