ON SEPTEMBER l5TH, TOGETHER
WE MOVE FORWARD
DON REEVES serves as Ward 3 Member on the D.C.
Board of Education. He was elected on November 6, 1996. On November 15, 1996 the control
board stripped the elected school board of its authority to operate the public schools. In
January 1997 Don was elected President of the D.C. Board of Education and concurrently
served as the only elected D.C. government official on the Emergency Transitional
Education Board of Trustees, which the control board appointed to operate the public
schools.
An author and Adjunct Professor of English, Don also served as a kindergarten room
parent, and parent representative on the Murch Elementary School Restructuring Team. He
serves on the advisory board of Cornell Universitys Catherwood Library and the D.C.
Cable Television Advisory Board.
DON REEVES is a graduate of New York City's High
School of Music and Art, Cornell Universitys School of Industrial and Labor
Relations, its Graduate School of English and George Washington University Law School.
While working as a contract specialist for the Department of Navys Naval Air Systems
Command, Don received a diploma from the U.S. Army Logistics Management Center, Fort Lee,
Virginia for training in the Management of Defense Acquisitions Contracts.
In the District of Columbia government, Don has served as the Labor Specialist for the
D.C. Public Employee Relations Board and Labor Relations Officer for the Office of Labor
Relations and Collective Bargaining.
DON REEVES and his wife of 18 years have two
children who attend D.C. public schools. In 1997 he saved five D.C. public schools from
being closed. As a member of the board of trustees, he was outspoken on behalf of citizens
and was not intimidated by the control board. Independent financial audits vindicated Don
Reeves efforts to end the trustees veil of secrecy. During the school closing
process he made academic performance a criteria to be considered in closing schools and
forced the trustees to visit every school they proposed to close and to hold citywide
public meetings to hear from the community. Don was censured by the trustees for revealing
to the public the names of the candidates being considered for D.C. Superintendent of
Schools. He was the lone dissenting voice on the board of trustees.
He stood up to the trustees and advocated a contingency plan to avoid the intentional
3-week delay in opening the public schools. The appointed school administration's tactics
to minimize Don Reeves impact on the school reform effort has led to his candidacy
for At-Large Council.

* DON * REEVES * AT-LARGE COUNCIL
Dear Friend,
On September 15th, we begin the journey toward the future D.C. government.
Last year while representing my children and yours as the elected President of the D.C.
Board of Education, I experienced an undemocratic situation. On the night I was duly
elected by the D.C. voters, the position I ran for was taken over by the control board.
Since that time we have been denied the opportunity to have the best ideas prevail in the
area of education policy. I seek the At- Large Council position to be visible and heard on
the important subject of public education in the District of Columbia as well as to be
part of the future D.C. government.
After saving five public schools from being closed last year, opposing the 3-week delay
in the opening of schools, being censured by the appointed school trustees for being
honest with the public and effectively debating the issues, my election as your At-Large
member on the D.C. Council will begin a new era in Washington. Education and
accountability will take center stage as we work toward building the foundation of our new
government.
I will also be an advocate for unity, showcasing our young people, improving public
services, establishing a guaranteed summer jobs program for D.C. youth, and improving
public schools and school choice. I want to revise parking enforcement, and create
incentives for D.C. business and property owners to promote economic growth. We must
improve the quality of life for all of our citizens from seniors residing in public
housing to AIDS sufferers who need reduced costs for treatment. Regional economic
collaboration of resources and neighborhood empowerment creates safety, the best defense
for the defenseless.
Victory on September 15th will send a message to Congress. For our great City to
achieve its limitless s destiny, we must have self-determination. When our government is
resumed, the conditions that led to its seizure must not be repeated. Together we must
chart a new direction for Washington, D.C.
I have faith in your courage, love of freedom, and concern for unity and democracy.
Vote for me on September 15th and together we will move forward.
Thank you for your time and attention
