Mayor Barry Issues Statement Endorsing D.C. Democratic Candidates

“Democrats Must Defeat Those Who Would Stand in the Way of Full Home Rule,” says Barry

Mayor Marion Barry, Jr., today, in his weekly press conference, issued the following statement endorsing the District’s slate of Democratic candidates:

“Over the past 40 years, I have proudly represented the Democratic party and its principles. In keeping with that commitment, today I announce my support for the slate of Democratic candidates for office in the District of Columbia,” said Mayor Barry.

“As Mayor, I have served our city for what often seems like a lifetime to me. Meeting the challenges of campaigns and elections have been a major part of my life. In other election years, it was I seeking the support and endorsement from my fellow Democrats; today, I am in new territory, lending my support to the new Democratic candidate for Mayor. It is an interesting and enlightening perspective for me.”

“Having said that, I want to add that I have the utmost confidence in each one of our Democratic candidates. From our Delegate to Congress, Eleanor Holmes Norton to Mayoral candidate Tony Williams, and our Council candidates: Linda Cropp, Phil Mendelson, Jim Graham, Kathy Patterson, Vincent Orange and Sharon Ambrose, I am assured that each one will serve our city well. These are not easy times in the District, but I know each of these candidates will successfully meet the challenges we face. I wish them well.”

“It is important for the Democratic party in this city, our nation’s capital, to stand together and work together to achieve full representation for all the citizens of the District of Columbia. It is up to the Democratic party to achieve full democracy for the District of Columbia. As history has proven, the Republican party has consistently detoured our quest for self determination, ignoring the will of the people. We, as Democrats, must defeat those who would stand in our way.” Mayor Barry said.
