BOARD OF TRADE PAC ENDORSES ANTHONY WILLIAMS

The Greater Washington Board of Trade’s District of Columbia political action committee today endorsed Anthony Williams for election in the September 15 Democratic Mayoral Primary.

After examining the positions of all mayoral candidates in what committee trustees termed a “strong field,” the committee declared Tony Williams the candidate best equipped to bring back the city’s credibility with Congress and with citizens locally, nationally and abroad.

The committee used four criteria to make its decision, according to PAC chair Ted Chaconas, who said Williams stood out in air four areas.

"Tony Williams is the candidate most likely to lead the city where it needs to be in regional business competitiveness, regional participation, federal credibility and restoring the Home Rule form of government. We believe Tony Williams is a leader who can give District residents back control over their own destiny.’

The Board of Trade’s District of Columbia political action committee also voted to endorse incumbent Frank Smith for Ward I Council member and to contribute to the campaign of At-Large Council candidate Greg Rhett for his support on business issues.

The committee also has endorsed Council Chair Linda Cropp for re-election.

The Greater Washington Board of Trade represents more than 1100 businesses in the District of Columbia, suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Because the region’s image and economic health are closely linked to the District of Columbia, the Board of Trade sees the upcoming Mayoral election as pivotal for the entire region
