The New Columbia Chapter of Sierra Club announced today that it is endorsing Phil Mendelson and incumbent at-large Council member David Catania for members of the Council At-large. Also endorsed were incumbent Kathy Patterson (Ward 3) and incumbent Sharon Ambrose (Ward 6).

“We are pleased to endorse four very talented individuals who have worked hard to protect the District's environment,” said Mark Wenzler, Political Committee Chair. “Sharon Ambrose, Kathy Patterson and David Catania have served this City well on the Council. They have opposed harmful development and worked for positive economic redevelopment. Phil Mendelson understands that a clean environment, open spaces and livable communities are essential for a revitalized City.”

Ambrose, Patterson and Catania all voted against the proposed Children’s Island amusement park, and against siting the proposed new D.C. convention center in Shaw because of its negative impact on the neighborhood.

Ambrose, Patterson and Catania all recently received a grade of “A” on the Sierra Club’s environmental report card, released earlier this week.

Mendelson is a long-term community leader. He fought to stop the Children’s Island amusement park and Bamey Circle highway project in Southeast Washington. He successfully fought to protect Glover Archibald Park, and supports a Sierra Club- backed plan to close Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park to commuter traffic..

Phil Mendelson has demonstrated that he will fight for healthy communities throughout the City. He will provide the leadership we need on the Council to restore and revitalize the District," said Sierra Club leader Jim Dougherty.

The Sierra Club has more than 2,700 members in the District and has long played an active role in shaping public policy on matters affecting the environment, the livability of our City, and public health.

One Earth, One Chance.
