Three Points for a First-Class DC

PHIL      DEMOCRAT
MENDELSON
DC COUNCIL AT-LARGE

1

A superior school system. I see the District as an “Education First” City. Education is the key to ensuring families will want to live here and businesses will want to work here. I’m committed to trimming the fat from school administration and raising the bar for student standards. I will push for well-maintained buildings, school-based management, greater accountability, and a fresh look at how our schools are run.

How do you know I can do this? I've worked with parent groups citywide to keep good schools from closing and to plan for the future of our children’s schools.

2

A safe, clean, city. Crime is still what worries us most. They say it’s on the decline. But to make DC a First-Class City, we must do more. Not just stop crimes, but solve them, since many criminals are repeat offenders. Also, we must make our city beautiful. We cannot be a “dumping” ground for trash from other states. We need efficient trash pickup, better free maintenance, and collective accountability for maintaining the environment.

How do you know I can do this? Safe—I’ve worked with my Police District to make community policing more effective, efficient, and community-friendly. Clean—I’ve helped citizens clamp down on trash transfer stations. I’ve fought for better public transit and helped save Grover Archibold Park.

3

A growing, vibrant economy. Jobs, jobs, jobs. We need to retain them and create them for the people who live in DC. We need to enhance our city’s business climate to give businesses and our residents a reason to stay here. My plan includes fairer, lower taxes, and more public support for neighborhood businesses.

How do you know I can do this? I’ve been an advocate for streamlining the city’s maze of permit and zoning regulations. I’ve helped structure fairer taxes when I worked for the late city council Chairman Dave Clarke.
