VOTE GREEN PARTY

ELECT SCOTT McLARTY

Ward One City Council November 3

What is the GREEN PARTY?

  • Most people associate the Green Party with our work to save the environment. But were also involved with many other issues: universal health care, the demand for living wages and democracy in the workplace, the right to affordable housing and quality education, and DC’s right to gain statehood and representation in Congress.
  • Unlike the major political parties and their candidates, the Greens take no money from corporations.
  • The Green Party gained national attention in 1996 when it ran consumer advocate Ralph Nader for President and American Indian environmental activist Winona LaDuke for Vice President.
  • Countries all over the world have Green Parties, on all continents, occupying seats in many national legislatures. Greens hold 49 seats in the German Parliament, and 8 seats in the Mexican Congress.
  • Visit the DC Greens Web site at: http://www.greenparties.org/dc Or call us at (202) 518-5624.

Who is SCOTT McLARTY?

  • Organizer for the Green Party, working to build membership; member of the advisory board for the campaign to elect Ralph Nader to the White House in 1996
  • Member of the Labor Party, the Emergency Coalition to Save Rent Control, the Alliance For Democracy, the Washington Peace Center
  • Chaired the DC Independent Progressive Coalition, a third party roundtable
  • Worked for UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE (single-payer coverage for all people), the care and rights of people with AIDS (ACT UP, AIDS and drug abuse prevention programs), and human rights (gay/lesbian/bisexual organizations and the Rainbow Coalition)
  • Published writer on politics and the arts, in The Washington Peace Letter, In These Times, Z Magazine, and Pink Noise
  • Strong background in music and the theater.... Wrote the musical score for the Off-Broadway (New York) musical The Brooklyn Bridge, and founded and ran a successful musical theater company in Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Received his BA from Yale University in 1980, and worked on a doctoral degree and taught at the University of Cincinnati
  • Maintains a 9-5 job while campaigning for office, and is a tenant in a rent-controlled apartment
  • Has lived in Columbia Heights, and now lives in Adams Morgan, both in Washington DC’s Ward One

INDEPENDENT LEADERSHIP

“I am running to win. This is neither a symbolic nor a single issue campaign.... We need someone on Council whose party doesn’t kneel before boardrooms or the suburbs. Democratic and Republican leadership has given us years of ineptitude, cronyism, corruption, lack of accountability — and an excuse for Congress to take over DC. Corporate and suburban business interests treat DC like a feeding trough.... We’ll find the solution to DC’s crises and Ward One’s problems in our own neighborhoods, citizens’ organizations, unions, and independent political parties. We must rebuild democracy from the ground up!” — Scott McLarty

A Green Platform for Ward One

  • Support SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and POSITIVE GROWTH for DC!
  • OVERSIGHT over development for Ward One residents, not just “input”....
  • Preserve Ward One’s diversity — don’t let development displace residents!
  • HOMETOWN ECONOMY: Promote small, locally owned DC shops and businesses — instead of giant corporate chain stores, glass-box office buildings, strip shopping malls, parking lots, and freeways
  • CLEAN, SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS: curbside & office building recycling,, neighborhood clean-up, expanded public transportation.... Preserve and expand our parks and green spaces!
  • PUBLIC EDUCATION: small class and school size, textbooks and supplies, repairs, competitive teacher pay, restoration and expansion of UDC!
  • AFFORDABLE HOUSING: home ownership, restored funding for tenant assistance and shelters.... Preserve RENT CONTROL and tenants’ rights!
  • HUMAN SERVICES: full funding for clinics, drug treatment, AIDS care (OUTLAW reallocation of AIDS funding!).... Support medical marijuana and expanded needle exchange!
  • Let’s work for UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE for all DC residents, regardless of income, employment, housing, age, prior medical condition
  • NO MORE multi-million-dollar “free lunch” giveaways and tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.... Instead, let’s reinvest that money in schools, housing, jobs, and human services
  • FIGHT the DC Domino Plan! First, they put up the MCI Arena.... Soon, the Shaw Convention Center and the Massachusetts Avenue ballpark.... Then more freeways, evicting thousands of residents, congesting and polluting DC, draining our economy (Inter-County Connector; Outer Beltway; New York Avenue freeway into DC; a revival of the I-95 extension through NW)
  • NO arena/convention center/ballpark surtaxes
  • NO privatization of Metrobus, private prisons, private school vouchers, “theme park” on Kingman and Heritage Islands, phone towers in Rock Creek Park!
  • NO MORE boarded up, ruined, vacant buildings, which invite crime, garbage, and rats — penalize negligent owners with a “split-rate” property tax
  • LOWER TAXES on middle & low income residents and small DC businesses, instead of corporations.... Establish a reciprocal tax plan for nonresident commuters.... Lower the sales tax on non-luxury goods to stimulate small DC businesses.... In 1995, DC’s richest ($1.8 million plus income) paid only 6.4% in taxes, while lower and middle income folks paid 9.5 to 10.5% — Let’s raise the tax 4% on $100,000 incomes for $150 million more in revenue
  • DEMAND full DEMOCRACY for DC!
  • DEMAND statehood and representation in Congress for DC, and an end to bureaucratic Financial Control Board rule.... NO MORE overpaid consultants!
  • DEMAND that Congress honor its promise to keep FEDERAL JOBS in DC
  • DEMAND that elected DC government serve the people of DC — instead of corporations, the suburbs, the Board of Trade, the Chamber of Commerce, Federal City Council, the wealthy....
  • Enforce “sunshine” laws (accountability in government contracting, mandatory public hearings, no secret deals)....
  • Mandate LIVING WAGES in all contracts with DC — no job outsourcing
  • DEMAND full funding for Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs), with expanded powers (the right to unite and authorize ballot measures, the right to sue DC government, supervision of community service sentencing, some authority over DPW)
  • DEMAND an end to police harassment of immigrants, young black men, gay people.... Maintain strong independent citizen oversight over the police.... Establish community service sentencing for nonviolent offenses instead of jailing more young people
  • DEMAND proportional representation, with more Council members from more political parties

Paid for by Ward One Citizens for McLarty, Philip Barlow, treasurer.
