Doctors endorse Kevin Chavous for DC Mayor

July, 3l, 1998.... . DOCPAC, the political action committee representing District of Columbia physicians, has endorsed candidate Kevin Chavous in his bid to become Mayor of the District of Columbia.

“Kevin Chavous is committed to the revitalization of this city and recognizes the important role which physicians can play in that effort,” said John Niles, Jr., MD, Chair of the District of Columbia Political Action Committee Board of Directors. “He understands better than most, that the thousands of physicians who practice in the District of Columbia are not only care-givers, but also employers, taxpayers and residents themselves who care very much about the quality of life experienced by the people of Washington.”

In endorsing Chavous, DOCPAC lauded the candidate for co-sponsoring DC Council Bill 12-501 to establish procedures through which patients can receive fair and objective resolution of grievances against health health plans. Dr. Niles also noted that Mr. Chavous supports efforts to reform the law in DC to hold HMOs and other insurance plans liable for negligently denying patients medically necessary care. “Mr. Chavous is committed to increasing access to needed health care including that provided by specialists and in emergency rooms, to holding insurance plans accountable for their decisions which affect medical care, and to restoring the doctor-patient relationship,” Dr. Niles said. “We are pleased to support him in this important campaign.”

The District of Columbia Political Action Committee (DOCPAC) is a voluntary, non-profit, non-partisan, unincorporated organization open to all persons, especially physicians and their spouses. DOCPAC was established to provide physicians with the opportunity to take part in the elective process. Its primary function is to support political candidates running for elective offices in the Council of the District of Columbia or for the office of mayor.
