CAROLE CLARKE
3320 17TH STREET, NW
WASHINGTON, DC 20010

September 12, 1998

Dear Voter:

From one neighbor to another, I wanted to let you know why I am supporting Kevin Chavous for the Democratic nomination for Mayor on September 15th and ask that you join in our effort.

This is the single most important election in our city's history. We need a Mayor who will reform our government and return it to the people. We need a Mayor who will improve our neighborhood schools and have a positive impact on students, teachers and parents. We need a Mayor who will help our police department be more responsive to the communities it serves. Moreover, we need a Mayor who will improve the delivery of city services, making our government user-fnendlier. More importantly, we need a Mayor who will build coalitions between the varied neighborhoods of Washington, D.C.

Kevin's vision for our city and communities emphasizes values and healthy places for families to raise children. He authored the bill that allows police to shut down crack houses and he opposed licenses for private clubs in residential areas. As a twenty-year resident of the Distinct, he has a long-standing commitment to sustaining and, in some instances, reclaiming vital neighborhoods.

I am voting for Kevin Chavous because he supports the changes we need and the commitments we must keep in order to make this work for all of us:

We must keep the promises that we have made to our senior citizens. The elimination of the Department on Aging which provides meals and vital services to 37,000 people, is not an option;

The Nation's Capital must have a University. Those who would argue otherwise are ignoring the fact that an affordable higher education is the key to creating a better life for our young people. That is why Kevin Chavous fought Anthony William's massive budget cuts and tuition increases at UDC.

Lastly, unlike Williams, who also proposed major cuts in the budget of DC General Hospital, Kevin Chavous is committed to maintaining and improving health services for all citizens.

If you agree that these are the types of changes we need and the leadership that we deserve, then I hope you will join me in supporting the one candidate who cares most about our city and who can lead the reform that is so necessary — Kevin Chavous.

You can help in a number of ways, placing a Kevin Chavous sign in your yard, helping at the polls on election day and, of course voting for #1 on the ballot, Kevin Chavous, on September 15th.

I hope you will join me in this exciting effort. Together we can make our city and our neighborhood a better place to live. If you will help, please call 332-7400 today.

Sincerely,

Carole Clarke
