WHO STANDS WITH YOU ON THE MAJOR ISSUES?

Some Questions About The District’s Mayoral Candidates . . .

CHAVOUS

WILLIAMS

Q. Which candidate for mayor has fought for senior citizens throughout his career in D.C. government?

Kevin Chavous has consistently stood up against cuts in programs and services for the elderly.

In 1996, Anthony Williams tried to eliminate the city’s Office on the Aging, which provides meals, in-home care and other services to some 37,000 elderly residents of the District.

Q. Which candidate has demonstrated a commitment to our children’s education in D.C.?

As Chief Financial Officer of the District of Columbia, Williams ordered massive budget cuts at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), triggering a drastic decline in enrollment and keeping students out of class for six weeks.

Kevin Chavous fought against these cutbacks and tuition hikes at UDC, and he is committed to starting free public school education for D.C. children at the age of three to boost their learning skills.

Q. Which candidate cares about fairness?

Anthony Williams recommended slashing the pay of unionized city employees by 6% in November, 1996. But he refused to cut his own pay or that of 14 other people in his office — all of whom were earning over $100,000 a year.

Kevin Chavous has supported working people and fair wages all of his life. And that’s why he has been endorsed by the Metropolitan Washington Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

Q. Which candidate cares about health care services for low-income District residents?

Anthony Williams has tried to balance the D.C. budget by proposing to close down D.C. General Hospital in Southeast Washington.

Kevin Chavous is committed to maintaining and improving emergency services at D.C. General, so that the residents can receive prompt and humane medical treatment.

Q. Which candidate believes city services can be improved without hurting those who need help the most?

Kevin Chavous stood up against the wholesale elimination of city services for children, youth, seniors, and the homeless — while producing a budget surplus by eliminating waste, not productive workers.

Anthony Williams took a slash-and-burn approach to city services in his efforts to balance the budget. No wonder Republican Congressman Tom Davis praised Williams as being “our guy,” because he took the approach the Republican Congress wanted.
