CHAVOUS
A Mayor for every neighborhood
A PUBLIC LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Last week, a former government worker shared with me her tale of misery, which went as
follows:
"...No mother should ever have to feel my pain nor endure the embarrassment that I
felt when my daughter asked me why a guard had to escort me out of a government building.
I had worked for the D.C. government for nineteen years and two months. I had received
another outstanding evaluation only a few months before Mr. Anthony Williams fired me and
gave me fifteen minutes to clean out my desk and leave the building. I had excellent work
habits; therefore, I was shocked at this type of inhumane treatment. I had moved through
the rank and had reached the level of a DS-9. Mr. Anthony Williams was hired in 1996 as
Chief Financial Officer by Mayor Barry and was given the authority to promulgate rules and
procedures to address the financial problems of the D.C. Government. He issued a
regulation that all financial officers would report directly to him. I was transferred to
his office. After two months in his office and only a few months after my last efficiency
rating, he terminated me. In fact, he fired 106 women, a majority African American. How do
you explain to children that fairness did not occur? My child wept with me. . .not because
I did not have a job, but of her concern about the way I was treated. She said, 'You are a
good mother and women should not be treated this way.'
We all understand downsizing, the need to reduce the size of government. What we do not
understand is how some people are able to be terminated such as Mr. David Watts, the
former director of the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, a white male who
received $122,000 severance pay while women and mothers are treated so differently. All
women everywhere should vote "No...No.... No" to Anthony Williams! He lacks
integrity and compassion. We must allow the new mayor someone like Kevin Chavous
to hire a good chief financial officer. If it happened to me it could happen to
you. We need a mayor for all the people."
Yes, we need a mayor who is compassionate and competent. We need a mayor who will take
actions to shape our government and build our city for the twenty-first century. We need a
mayor with a history of demonstrated commitment to living in our city, working on our
city's problems, and envisioning a new tomorrow.
VOTE KEVIN CHAVOUS FOR MAYOR ON SEPTEMBER 15.
