Kevin Chavous
A Mayor for every neighborhood
Health Care
Kevin Chavous views quality healthcare as a basic right. Our city is blessed with three
teaching hospitals and possibly the best hospital for children in the nation. Our
residents should never be without quality healthcare.
Kevin Chavous' Proposals
Kevin Chavous will improve and protect health care for our citizens by doing the
following:
- Facilitating the shift from fee for service to managed care for our poorer residents.
HMOs often make promises to potential participants that evaporate over time. Mayor Chavous
will be vigilant to be sure we have a top-notch system of care and that promises made to
enrollees are kept. Mayor Chavous will sanction health care companies that compromise
service and weed them out, if necessary.
- Seeing to it that the city fully implements the new federal initiative to expand health
care to children not covered by Medicaid.
- Supporting the extension of health care to families a full year after their benefits
end. Kevin Chavous will not leave our low-income women and children behind.
Increasing public health awareness
We must increase public education about the Districts new health maintenance
programs for those on Medicaid. This new program requires selection of a health care
program and primary care provider and for those not experienced in this form of health
care service delivery, public education is key to a successful program. The Chavous
Administration will promote greater citizen awareness of health care and preventive health
maintenance through an aggressive public awareness educational campaign. Issues such as
adequate prenatal care, HlV/aids awareness and prevention, proper funding for the delivery
of health care services, immunizations, HMO managed care, etc., will be featured as part
of this effort
Supplementing Title X funds
Kevin Chavous strongly supports supplementing Title X funds. Provision of family
planning services for District residents should not be dependent upon the will of the
federal government. We will set our own standards and with that must come a commitment of
funding. |
