TUITION REBATES & CITYWIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

To bring more taxpayers back to D.C.; to stem the high junior & senior high school drop out rate; to make education more accessible to those who need it most; to help businesses access a qualified, sophisticated workforce; and to help people overcome costly poverty, welfare, and addiction —

Alpha Brown is pledging to implement two new programs:

CITYWIDE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Brown administration, through a public-private partnership, will guarantee a college education or trades training to any child who graduates from D.C. public schools with a 3.0 grade point average and a 95% attendance for five years. This has been done before.

U.D.C. TUITION REBATE PROGRAM PROPOSAL
The Brown administration will provide rebate college education tuition paid to the Univ. of the District of Columbia by any participating graduate who also graduated from D.C. public or charter schools with a 2.5 grade point average and a 90% attendance for five years. Tuition is to be paid up front by student. Graduates of U.D.C. would receive the escrowed money on graduation, minus interest. Those graduates electing to purchase a home in D.C. would be granted the interest and other incentives for adding to the city’s tax base. This is to be funded by recapturing avoided alcohol & tobacco taxes.

What a way to keep kids in school, development people & the economy — all at the same time!

This city spends $1 billion yearly in correctional services — $25,000+ per person per year. Why can’t we spend $3,000 to prevent jail and promote economic development?
