BRAZIL ATTACKS WILLIAMS’ ASSOCIATION WITH CRIMINALS

Washington, D.C. mayoral candidate Harold Brazil tonight launched an attack on primary election opponent Anthony Williams challenging him to “tell the people of Washington why your campaign is littered with convicted felons?”

Mr. Brazil issued the challenge at a mayoral debate at the Channel 16 studios.

The full text of Brazil’s statement is below:

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I look forward to sharing my vision for the city with you during the course of this debate. I want to use my first two minutes to discuss a matter of great importance — the issue of integrity.

Tony, when I look at a list of your campaign supporters, I get the feeling that this is an old script for “America’s Most Wanted.” You have gleefully embraced a number of people who represent everything that is wrong in our city.

For example:

  • Ivanhoe Donaldson: convicted felon!
  • Bud McFarlane: convicted felon. And international arms dealer!
  • Michael Brown: convicted lawbreaker!

Along with them, you have thrown your arms around a sordid collection of individuals who have been feeding at the public trough and ripping off the taxpayers of this city for years. These are the people who have who have helped bring down home rule. These are people who have brought shame on our city. These are people whom we should be running from. But you are running to them and holding them up as our future.

As a former United States prosecutor, I wouldn’t have these people within 10 miles of the city. And when I am elected mayor, their gravy train will be derailed.

Tony, you owe the people of this city an explanation as to why you are cavorting with these people, and what promises you have made to them, because they don't do anything unless they get something in return.

The people of Washington deserve better than this. You simply cannot be trusted to run this city.

Ladies and gentlemen, theses are tough times for Washington. We need a tough leader. I am that leader. Please take time to look at my record of accomplishment as a City Councilmember. Please listen to my vision for moving our city forward to build the best future for the children of Washington, D.C.

Thank you
