DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE 1501 M Street, NW, Suite 700 Washington DC 20005 202/296-6070 dcgop@aol.com PRESS RELEASE
DC REPUBLICAN PARTY URGES VOTERS TO WRITE IN CAROL SCHWARTZ FOR MAYOR ON PRIMARY DAYHopes Carol will Accept the Challenge against Democrat Primary Winner Washington D.C. Today, the Executive Committee of the DC Republican Committee unanimously voted to urge District voters to write in the name of At-Large Councilmember Carol Schwartz for Mayor on Primary Day, September 10, 2002. "Given her long record of leadership and accomplishments in District government, together with her knowledge of all District citizens and communities, we feel Carol should be the next Mayor of the District of Columbia," said Betsy Werronen, Chairman of the DC Republican Committee. "We urge all voters to go to the polls and write in Carol's name on Tuesday, September 10. We are hopeful that Carol will declare her candidacy and accept the nomination so that she will be on the November ballot." Werronen continued, "No one can match the record or leadership and political skills to run the District government and unite the city like Carol. Mayor Williams has demonstrated his lack of leadership and has failed the District's residents." "Everything Carol is, Tony Williams is not. She is homegrown, she has lived here for her whole adult life, she has raised her children here and they have all attended public schools, and she has been active in civic and charity affairs and D.C. local government all her life," commented Werronen. She continued, "The petition fiasco is only the latest example of Williams' management failures and ethical lapses. While he said he would return trust in our government, his tenure as Mayor has been marked with numerous ethical and legal improprieties. He has demonstrated that he is a poor judge of character by hiring countless failed leaders to help run the District government. While he talks of improving city services, lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles are as long as ever and the citizens still must deal with a unresponsive bureaucracy. Our students are still failing to learn, despite record education budgets, and on top of it, crime is up and the police are not on the streets where they belong." "It is time for new leadership in the District, and we know that Carol is the right person to be the District's next Mayor," concluded Werronen."
