Dear Neighbor:

Who’s for kids and who’s just kidding?

I ask for your support in the September 10 Democratic primary to continue serving as Ward 3’s representative to the D.C. Council. In two terms on the Council I have:

  • Helped secure a 50% increase in funding for D.C. Public Schools;
  • Kept open four successful schools—Hearst in Ward 3, Peabody in Ward 6, Patterson in Ward 8, and Nalle in Ward 7—through my research and advocacy in the school closing debate;
  • Secured "line items" in District budgets to protect funding for local schools and for priorities including teacher aides, counselors and substitute teachers;
  • Provided legislative muscle to build the first new school in the District in 30 years: Oyster Bilingual Elementary School in Woodley Park;
  • Secured $350,000 in FY 2003 planning funds for a new Stoddert Recreation Center.

I authored the law to improve the investigations of child abuse and neglect; set aside funding for the Child Fatality Review Committee; proposed the nation’s most comprehensive public disclosure law on child deaths. And I wrote the District’s graduated teen driving law – praised by the American Automobile Association as "the kind of strategy we know will save lives."

"Who’s for kids and who’s just kidding" is the theme of the Coalition for America’s Children—250 local, state, and national organizations working for sound policy to benefit children. I served on the Coalition’s executive committee when I ran for the Council in 1994. I’m for kids and my record shows I’m not kidding!

I ask for your support September 10. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kathy Patterson
