MENDELSON GAINS CITYWIDE SUPPORT, ADDS WARD 3 and WARD 7 DEMOCRATS to GROWING LIST of ENDORSEMENTS;
ANNOUNCES AFGE ENDORSEMENT

(Washington, DC) - In the course of two days Phil Mendelson gained the endorsements of the Ward 7 and Ward 3 Democrats for his re-election as At-Large Councilmember. Also this week, the Mendelson campaign announced the endorsement of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).

Speaking about his most recent endorsements, At-Large Councilmember Mendelson said, "These endorsements reflect my hard work and the commitment I've shown for communities across the city. I am the only candidate in this race with endorsements in Ward 3, Ward 7 and Ward 8, and the only candidate to be endorsed by organized labor. This speaks to the fact that I have a strong record of involvement and accomplishment in the diverse communities that are Washington, DC."

On the Ward 7 endorsement, which came after a candidates forum at the 6th District Headquarters the night of June 26th, Matthew Shannon, president of Ward 7 Democrats said, "We had an enthusiastic turnout." He went on to say, "Councilmember Mendelson made a sterling presentation to the Ward 7 Democrats."

The Ward 3 endorsement, held the following night at St. Columba's church, was captured by Mendelson despite the required, and difficult to achieve, "super majority" 75% of voting delegates.

After the meeting Ward 3 Democrats president Thorn Pozen said, "Phil Mendelson has been a champion for Ward Three throughout his career. As a civic activist, a council staffer and an elected official, Phil has done so much for the residents of Ward Three. Since becoming a citywide representative he's demonstrated that same dedication and tenacity throughout all eight wards. There can be no question that his years of public service showed in Ward Three's enthusiastic endorsement of him."

The Ward 7 and Ward 3 Democratic endorsements, and that of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), are the latest additions to the list of organizations backing At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson's bid for re-election. Mendelson continues to be the only At-Large Council candidate to receive the support of organized labor. Of the three Democratic Ward organizations to have held endorsement meetings, Mendelson has captured all three (3, 7 and 8). Also, on Earth Day 2002 the Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Mendelson. In May 2002, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club endorsed Mendelson, and DOCPAC, on behalf of doctor members of the D.C. Medical Society, voted to endorse Mendelson.
