Durand A. Ford, Democratic Candidate for
Ward 7 Councilmember in the
September 12, 2000, Primary

Brochure, August 2000

Brochure front page, the Make Sense CandidatePUBLIC SAFETY

Work closely with the the Metropolitan Police Department to assure neighborhoods a community oriented Police Department.

Establish eight Police Districts one for each Ward with at least one substation, utilizing Ward boundaries. Which will afford for greater accountability all personnel, automobiles and equipment assigned to each Ward.

Car theft affects all of us, thru loss of life, serious injury and property damage. I will propose a two year minimum sentence for car theft and a five year minimum sentence for carjacking. Upon arrest, there will be no release on bond, no plea bargaining or negotiations of community service.

Halfway houses should be for those individuals who have committed misdemeanors, who are also employed or employable and who are not repeat offenders.

Developed a Ward 7 "Look Out For Seniors" program.

Economic Development

Propose tax incentives to new businesses who build in Ward 7 and hire and train a percentage of their employees from Ward 7 residents.

Encourage corporate businesses to build in Ward 7.

Education

Support continued funding of the University of the District of Columbia.

Propose two separate positions of a Superintendent of Education and a Superintendent of School Facilities. (Building & Grounds) The positions should be given the autonomy to carry out their duties.

Environment

Rid the Ward of rundown and abandoned property.

Establish a Ward 7 clean up month.

Financial Management

Be a watch dog over city spending.

Cut the fat and streamline the government. There are just too many layers of management personnel. Increase the ratio of workers per manager

Lets work together to make Ward 7 a safe and proud place to live.

  • Can Ward 7 have upscale restaurants, where you can go and have dinner and cocktails.
  • Visualize a High Tech and/or other large business in Ward 7 hiring a percentage of Ward 7 residents.
  • How about a HOTEL
  • All of the above is possible with the proper leadership.
  • WORK TOGETHER TO  HELP OURSELVES
  • I love this city and it saddens me to see how we, the citizens of Ward 7 are looked upon with little or no importance. We have to wait until election time for "OUR" elected OFFICIALS to say Hello To Us. We are taken for granted. Lets end it. Don't take another step. Lets end it NOW!
  • I was born here. my Mother and Father were born here at the Beginning of the nineteen hundreds and my Grandmothers and Grandfathers were born here in the eighteen hundreds. so yes, I have a stake here.

Elect Me And There Will Be A Change For Better Representation.

No more business as usual. No more see you at election time.

I will represent all of Ward 7.
