BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN FANNING
Democratic Candidate
D.C. Council, Ward 2

John Fanning is a native of New York City. The youngest of four children, he is 37 years old. John attended Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey and received an Associate Degree in Public Administration.

In 1982, John moved to the District of Columbia's Logan Circle neighborhood. He was employed by the United States Senate's Office of the Sergeant at Arms where he worked in many areas of the Service Department. In 1986, he was hired as office services supervisor by the law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood. Three years later he went to work for the Price Waterhouse accounting firm as office services manager, an- in-1-993 took a similar position with the National Association of Counties.

In 1995, John was appointed to the Office of the Ombudsman in the Executive Office of the Mayor, with responsibility for assisting Ward 2 residents who needed help or action from the District or federal governments, but who didn't know where to go for a solution. Serving in this capacity under both Mayor Marion Barry and Mayor Anthony Williams, John earned a reputation within Ward 2 as a community problem-solver who knew how to help citizens negotiate the often confusing District and federal bureaucracies.

In addition to his Ward 2 ombudsman position, John served his community for four years as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner. He was elected to ANC 2C and 2F in 1990, and reelected in 1992. He served as vice chairman of the ANC for two years. John has also actively worked with the Dupont Circle Citizens Association and the Logan Circle Community Association, the Ward 2 Democrats and numerous other community and local organizations.

John serves on the boards of directors of Carter Barron, Youth in the Performing Arts, and Friends of the Kennedy Playground. His many honors include the "Community Service Award" of the Logan Circle Community Association, and the "Outstanding Community Service Award for Neighborhood Crime Prevention" from the Orange and Red Hat Patrols for Public Safety.

An avid softball player, John has been a member of the Chesapeake & Potomac Softball League for 16 years, and his team has played in the softball World Series for the last two years. John is a homeowner and resides in the 1600 block of Marion Street, N.W., in the Shaw community.
