WHAT JACK EVANS HAS DONE IN SOUTHWEST TO IMPROVE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!!

Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans has helped revitalize Southwest in many ways. Eliminating drugs, revitalizing waterside mall, improving schools and improving public safety are but a few of the challenges which Jack is working with the community to tackle. Through both the efforts of this Council office and the Southwest Task Force (which he created) and :in partnership with the community and government, Jack has had the following recent sasses in Southwest:

**Saving the Arena Stage. Jack played a leading role in convincing Arena Stage to scrap its plans to relocate downtown. Arena Stage now plans to not only stay in Southwest but to renovate and expand their facility! This is key to the economic revitalization of Southwest.

**Renovating the Waterside Mall. Due to the Efforts of Jack and the Retail Action group of the Task Force, new automatic doors have been installed at the Mall and public safety/cleanliness have been upgraded. Task Force, Metro, and Mall representatives have agreed to the installation of curb cuts which will create safer, direct access to the mall from the metro exit.

**Bringing the Millennium Arts Center. Jack has tirelessly worked to help guide the Millennium Arts Center, a national interactive arts center, in its bid to acquire the Randall School property and create a 21 st century cultural resource for Southwest.

**Cutting the government redtape to ensure the construction of 94 townhouses at 8th & G Streets, S.W. Construction should begin within the year.

**Renovation of the Southwest Fish Market. Jack worked with local and federal officials to ensure funds were budgeted for the renovation of this local attraction.

**Construction of the Benjamin Banneker Memorial. Jack has worked with community leaders to help accelerate the installation of this memorial at L'Enfant Plaza.

**Directing Government Resources. Mayor Williams, the Deputy Mayor for Planning & Economic Development and the Director of the D.C. Office of Planning are a few of. the government officials Jack has brought to Southwest in the past six months to meet with residents.

As a result, the neighborhood has seen a marked increase in the delivery of municipal services -- from repair of G Street (which was damaged by the water main break) to the replacement of the 700 7th Street sidewalk to the removal of dead trees to the mending of the fence at Amidon School. Our current efforts include pressuring the Department of Recreation and Parks to refurbish Lansburgh Park.

**Contributing Funds and Participating in the Urban Land Institute study, a community collaborative effort which proposed plans to redesign the waterfront and Waterside Mail.

**Actively supported the Syphax Village Homes proposal which will create 40 affordable housing units.
