Mother of eight children and a public school parent who is also a member of the Kellogg National Taskforce on African American Men & boys.

Was appointed by President Clinton to serve as vice-Chair of the President's Commission for the Arts and Humanities.

Member of the American Association of Museum's National Advisory Committee on Education.

Co-founded the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

Co-founded and served as co-Chair of the Smithsonian Institution's Cultural Equity Committee, which brought greater racial and cultural diversity to the Smithsonian's professional ranks, exhibitions and educational programs.

Chaired the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and on the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute.

Trustee of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

Member of the Advisory Board of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University

Member of the Executive Committee of the D.C. Board of Higher Education, which Implemented the merger of Federal City College, the Washington Technical Institute and the D.C. Teachers College to create the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

Peggy Cooper Cafritz, known city-wide and nationally for her public service and leadership in education and the arts, has been a resident of the District of Columbia for 37 years. While attending George Washington University, (B.S. in political science and a law degree), she co-founded the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. She continues to serve the school, and its non-profit affiliate, the Ellington Fund and has crafted a unique governing partnership for the school with the D.C. Public School system, the Kennedy Center, George Washington University and the Ellington community.
